Humbucker vs Trembucker

A common question with Seymour Duncan pickups is, Humbucker vs Trembucker...which one do I need?

Seymour Duncan offer most of their humbuckers in 2 sizes, Humbucker and Trembucker, but what do these 2 options actually mean?

Humbuckers and Trembuckers are actually identical versions of the same pickup, bar one thing - the spacing of the pole pieces.

Humbucker vs Trembucker

For Seymour Duncan standard humbuckers, these are built to the traditional Gibson string spacing of 49mm (1.930") - this is measuring  from the centre of the high E string to the centre of the low E string at the bridge pickup location. When it comes to Trembuckers, these are built for guitars with tremolo bridges (particularly Floyd Rose style) - these have a wider string spacing of 52.6mm (2.070″).

What this all means is that the pole pieces need to be spaced slightly further apart on Tremolo bridge systems in order to more accurately sense the vibrations of their respective strings...hence the need for Trembucker pickups.

All of this generally only applies to bridge humbuckers, because by the time the strings pass over the neck pickup, their spacing has narrowed down. Therefore, a standard Humbucker will be correctly spaced for your guitar strings whether you have Gibson or Floyd Rose spacing at the bridge.

Hope this helps!
